Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs) in Diabetes

Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are harmful compounds formed through the non-enzymatic reaction between sugars and proteins, lipids, or nucleic acids. In diabetes, elevated glucose levels accelerate AGEs' formation, leading to various complications. AGEs contribute to vascular damage, neuropathy, and nephropathy by enhancing oxidative stress and triggering inflammatory responses. They also interfere with normal protein function, disrupting cellular signaling and contributing to insulin resistance. Strategies to reduce AGE formation, such as dietary modifications and pharmacological agents, could mitigate their detrimental effects and improve overall diabetic outcomes.
