Advanced Glycation Markers in Diabetes

Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are harmful compounds formed when sugars bind to proteins or lipids, contributing to various complications in diabetes. Elevated levels of AGEs correlate with oxidative stress and inflammation, playing a significant role in the development of diabetic complications, including neuropathy, retinopathy, and cardiovascular diseases. Measuring advanced glycation markers, such as serum fructosamine and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), provides valuable insights into glycemic control over time. Strategies to reduce AGE formation, including dietary modifications, antioxidant supplementation, and improved glycemic control, can mitigate their detrimental effects and improve long-term outcomes for diabetic patients.
