Beta-Oxidation in Diabetic Metabolism

Beta-oxidation, the metabolic process where fatty acids are broken down to generate energy, is notably altered in diabetes. In individuals with insulin resistance or insufficient insulin production, cells rely more on fat metabolism due to impaired glucose uptake. This increases beta-oxidation, leading to an excess of ketone bodies, which can result in diabetic ketoacidosis, a potentially life-threatening condition. Chronic reliance on beta-oxidation also contributes to the accumulation of fatty acids and lipotoxicity, further impairing metabolic functions. Therapies that restore balanced glucose metabolism, such as insulin administration, are essential to reduce the over-reliance on fat oxidation in diabetic patients.
