Cell Surface Receptors in Diabetes Pathophysiology

Cell surface receptors, particularly insulin receptors and glucose transporters like GLUT4, play crucial roles in regulating glucose uptake and maintaining normal blood sugar levels. In diabetes, insulin receptors on cells such as those in muscle, fat, and liver tissues become resistant, reducing their responsiveness to insulin. This leads to hyperglycemia, as glucose cannot efficiently enter cells. Additionally, defective insulin receptor signaling impairs glycogen synthesis and increases glucose production in the liver. Understanding the dynamics of these receptors helps explain the pathophysiology of diabetes and guides the development of therapies aimed at enhancing insulin sensitivity or receptor function to restore metabolic balance.
