Cellular Metabolic Pathways Affected by Diabetes

Diabetes significantly impacts various cellular metabolic pathways, primarily those involved in glucose and lipid metabolism. In insulin-resistant tissues, such as skeletal muscle and liver, glucose uptake is impaired, leading to elevated blood glucose levels. Concurrently, altered lipid metabolism promotes the accumulation of free fatty acids, which can induce lipotoxicity and exacerbate insulin resistance. Additionally, diabetes affects the mitochondria, disrupting energy production and contributing to oxidative stress. Understanding these affected pathways is vital for developing targeted therapeutic approaches, such as insulin sensitizers and lifestyle interventions, that can help restore metabolic function and improve glycemic control.
