Cytokine Storm in Severe Diabetes Complications

A cytokine storm refers to an excessive immune response where high levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), are released. In diabetes, especially during infections or metabolic stress, cytokine storms can significantly worsen complications. This inflammatory response exacerbates insulin resistance, leading to poor blood glucose control. In severe cases, it can trigger acute diabetic complications like diabetic ketoacidosis or organ failure. Managing cytokine production and reducing inflammation is critical to preventing severe outcomes in diabetic patients, especially during infections or in cases of poorly managed diabetes.
