Diabetes and Oxidative Stress

Diabetes is closely linked to oxidative stress, a condition characterized by an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants in the body. In diabetes, elevated blood sugar levels can lead to the excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which damage cells and tissues. This oxidative damage contributes to various complications, including cardiovascular disease, neuropathy, and retinopathy. Moreover, chronic inflammation associated with diabetes exacerbates oxidative stress, creating a vicious cycle that impairs insulin signaling and glucose metabolism. Antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E, and compounds found in fruits and vegetables, can help mitigate oxidative stress. Managing blood sugar levels through diet, exercise, and medication is essential to reduce oxidative damage and prevent the progression of diabetic complications, highlighting the importance of a comprehensive approach to diabetes management.
