Dysregulation of Lipid Metabolism in Diabetes

Dysregulation of lipid metabolism is a hallmark of diabetes, particularly in type 2 diabetes (T2D). In this condition, insulin resistance impairs the body’s ability to properly regulate lipid breakdown and storage. As a result, excessive free fatty acids are released into the bloodstream, leading to an abnormal accumulation of triglycerides in tissues such as the liver and muscle. This lipid overload contributes to insulin resistance, inflammation, and cellular stress, exacerbating hyperglycemia and metabolic dysfunction. Moreover, high levels of cholesterol and triglycerides elevate the risk of cardiovascular diseases, which are prevalent complications among individuals with diabetes. Therapeutic strategies targeting lipid metabolism, including lifestyle changes and medications, are essential to improving metabolic health in diabetes management.
