Endothelial Dysfunction in Diabetes

Endothelial dysfunction is a critical complication associated with diabetes, significantly contributing to cardiovascular disease, which is prevalent in diabetic patients. The endothelium, a thin layer of cells lining blood vessels, plays a vital role in vascular health by regulating blood flow and maintaining balance in clotting and inflammation. In diabetes, elevated blood sugar levels can lead to oxidative stress and inflammation, impairing endothelial function. This results in reduced nitric oxide production, which is essential for vasodilation, leading to increased vascular resistance and blood pressure. Furthermore, dysregulated glucose metabolism promotes atherosclerosis, increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Effective management of blood glucose levels, along with lifestyle modifications such as diet and exercise, is crucial for preserving endothelial health and reducing the risk of cardiovascular complications in individuals with diabetes.
