Erythrocyte Metabolism in Diabetes

Erythrocyte metabolism is integral to managing diabetes, as red blood cells (RBCs) are crucial for transporting oxygen and regulating glucose levels. In people with diabetes, RBC function can be adversely affected, resulting in increased oxidative stress and disrupted glycolytic pathways. Elevated blood glucose levels can alter hemoglobin, leading to the formation of glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), a key marker for assessing long-term glucose management. Furthermore, changes in the lifespan and membrane characteristics of RBCs can impact blood viscosity and circulation efficiency. A deeper understanding of erythrocyte metabolism in the context of diabetes may shed light on complications and enhance management strategies for better treatment outcomes.
