While the endocrine function of the pancreas, particularly insulin production, is central to diabetes, the exocrine function also plays a role in the disease. The pancreas produces digestive enzymes, and in diabetes, exocrine function can be impaired, leading to digestive issues such as malabsorption and pancreatic insufficiency. This link between diabetes and exocrine dysfunction is particularly seen in patients with Type 3c diabetes, often resulting from pancreatitis or pancreatic surgery. Addressing exocrine insufficiency in diabetic patients through enzyme replacement therapy and dietary modifications can improve gastrointestinal symptoms and enhance overall health outcomes.
