Glucose Homeostasis

Glucose homeostasis refers to the complex process by which the body maintains stable blood glucose levels, crucial for overall health and energy management. In individuals with diabetes, this regulation is disrupted due to either insufficient insulin production or the body’s inability to effectively use insulin. As a result, glucose levels can become too high (hyperglycemia) or too low (hypoglycemia), leading to various health complications. Effective glucose homeostasis involves a delicate balance of hormonal control, primarily by insulin and glucagon, which work to lower and raise blood sugar levels, respectively. Lifestyle factors such as diet, physical activity, and stress management also play vital roles in maintaining this balance. Understanding glucose homeostasis is essential for managing diabetes and preventing its associated risks, ultimately supporting long-term health and well-being.
