Glycogen Synthase Activity in Diabetes

Glycogen synthase is a vital enzyme that facilitates the conversion of glucose into glycogen, serving as a primary energy storage form. In individuals with diabetes, particularly those experiencing insulin resistance, glycogen synthase activity often diminishes. This reduction impairs the synthesis of glycogen and results in persistently high blood glucose levels, worsening hyperglycemia and increasing the risk of diabetes-related complications. Emerging research indicates that boosting glycogen synthase activity could enhance glucose regulation and mitigate hyperglycemia in diabetic patients. Targeting this enzyme through innovative therapeutic approaches may offer new avenues for improving glycemic control and overall metabolic health in those affected by diabetes.
