Hepatic Enzyme Regulation in Diabetes

Hepatic enzymes play a crucial role in glucose and lipid metabolism, and their regulation is often disrupted in diabetes. Key enzymes like glycogen synthase, involved in glycogen storage, and glucose-6-phosphatase, involved in glucose production, are dysregulated in insulin resistance. This leads to increased glucose output by the liver, worsening hyperglycemia. Additionally, enzymes involved in lipid metabolism, such as fatty acid synthase, are often overactive, contributing to hepatic steatosis. Managing diabetes involves regulating these enzymes through medications, lifestyle changes, and glycemic control to restore metabolic balance and prevent liver-related complications like non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
