Diabetes is associated with an increased risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), a primary liver cancer. The underlying mechanisms include chronic hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which often coexist in diabetic patients. Elevated insulin levels may promote tumor growth through various pathways, including increased cell proliferation and decreased apoptosis. Regular screening for liver abnormalities in individuals with diabetes is essential for early detection of HCC, as outcomes are significantly better with timely intervention. Lifestyle modifications, alongside careful management of diabetes and related conditions, can help mitigate the risk of HCC in this vulnerable population.
