Hormonal Interactions in Diabetes

Hormonal interactions play a crucial role in diabetes, particularly with insulin, glucagon, and other hormones that regulate blood sugar levels. In Type 1 diabetes, the body's failure to produce insulin impairs glucose absorption, resulting in high blood sugar levels. Type 2 diabetes is characterized by insulin resistance, where cells fail to respond properly to insulin, causing the pancreas to produce more insulin initially, but later failing to keep up with demand. Glucagon, produced by the pancreas, raises blood glucose levels by stimulating the liver to convert glycogen into glucose, counterbalancing insulin’s effects. Additionally, hormones like cortisol, epinephrine, and growth hormone can exacerbate blood sugar imbalances, especially during stress or illness, complicating diabetes management. Understanding these hormonal dynamics is essential for effective diabetes treatment and prevention strategies.
