Hormone Secretion Irregularities in Diabetes

Diabetes is characterized by irregularities in hormone secretion, particularly insulin, glucagon, and amylin. In type 1 diabetes, the autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta-cells leads to absolute insulin deficiency. Conversely, type 2 diabetes often features insulin resistance alongside inappropriate glucagon secretion, exacerbating hyperglycemia. Additionally, altered levels of amylin, a hormone co-secreted with insulin, contribute to impaired glucose homeostasis and appetite regulation. These hormonal imbalances can lead to a vicious cycle of metabolic dysfunction, making the management of hormonal secretion critical for effective diabetes treatment.
