It integrates hormonal signals from the body, including insulin and leptin, to regulate appetite, energy expenditure, and glucose production. In diabetes, particularly type 2, hypothalamic function can be impaired, leading to dysregulated appetite and increased food intake, exacerbating hyperglycemia. Furthermore, chronic inflammation in the hypothalamus has been linked to insulin resistance. Research suggests that targeting hypothalamic pathways may offer new therapeutic approaches for diabetes management. Interventions such as caloric restriction, physical activity, and medications that influence hypothalamic signaling can enhance insulin sensitivity and improve metabolic health. Understanding the hypothalamic regulation of energy balance is essential for developing effective strategies to manage diabetes and its associated complications.
