Inflammatory cytokines are crucial mediators in the progression of both Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes. In Type 1 Diabetes (T1D), immune cells produce pro-inflammatory cytokines like tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), and interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), which attack pancreatic beta cells and lead to their destruction. This results in reduced insulin production. In Type 2 Diabetes (T2D), chronic low-grade inflammation caused by cytokines such as IL-6 and TNF-α contributes to insulin resistance and the dysfunction of key metabolic tissues like the liver, muscle, and adipose tissue. Understanding how cytokines promote beta-cell damage and insulin resistance is essential for developing therapeutic strategies aimed at reducing inflammation, protecting beta cells, and improving insulin sensitivity.
