Intracellular Lipid Transport in Diabetes

Intracellular lipid transport is crucial for maintaining cellular lipid homeostasis, especially in the context of diabetes. Dysregulated lipid metabolism can lead to excessive accumulation of lipids within cells, contributing to insulin resistance and other metabolic disorders. Key proteins, such as fatty acid transport proteins and perilipins, facilitate the movement of lipids within cells. In diabetes, alterations in these transport mechanisms can exacerbate conditions like non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and cardiovascular risk. Research is ongoing to explore the regulatory pathways governing intracellular lipid transport and how these processes can be targeted to improve metabolic health. Enhancing lipid transport mechanisms may provide therapeutic opportunities for preventing complications in diabetic patients.
