Ketogenesis Abnormalities in Diabetes

In diabetes, particularly type 1, the regulation of ketogenesis can become disrupted. This metabolic process takes place when the liver transforms fatty acids into ketone bodies during times of low glucose availability. When diabetes is uncontrolled, a lack of insulin leads to increased lipolysis, resulting in the excessive production of ketones and the risk of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). If not treated swiftly, DKA can be life-threatening. Thus, regular monitoring of blood ketone levels and effective management of glucose through insulin therapy and dietary modifications are essential to prevent DKA and its severe complications.
