Lipotoxicity refers to the detrimental effects of excess lipids on cellular functions, particularly in insulin-sensitive tissues. In diabetes, particularly type 2, elevated free fatty acids lead to impaired insulin signaling, beta-cell dysfunction, and inflammation. This toxic lipid accumulation can hinder glucose metabolism, contributing to insulin resistance. Furthermore, lipotoxicity exacerbates oxidative stress, promoting a cycle of cellular damage that worsens metabolic dysregulation. Targeting lipotoxicity through lifestyle interventions or pharmacological agents can be crucial for restoring metabolic health and preventing complications associated with diabetes.
