Mitochondrial Dysfunction in Diabetes

Mitochondrial dysfunction plays a critical role in the pathophysiology of diabetes, impacting energy metabolism and cellular homeostasis. In diabetic patients, impaired mitochondrial function can lead to reduced ATP production, increased oxidative stress, and enhanced inflammation. Elevated glucose levels may contribute to mitochondrial damage through pathways such as increased lipid peroxidation and the accumulation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs). Consequently, this dysfunction is linked to insulin resistance and β-cell failure, exacerbating hyperglycemia. Grasping the mechanisms that drive mitochondrial dysfunction in diabetes is crucial for creating targeted therapeutic approaches to enhance mitochondrial health and restore metabolic balance.
