Non-Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (NIDDM), commonly known as Type 2 diabetes, is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by insulin resistance and impaired insulin secretion. Unlike Type 1 diabetes, where the body fails to produce insulin, individuals with NIDDM typically maintain some insulin production but cannot use it effectively. Risk factors include obesity, physical inactivity, and genetic predisposition. Symptoms often develop gradually and may include increased thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, and blurred vision. Management involves lifestyle modifications such as a balanced diet, regular exercise, and, when necessary, oral medications to enhance insulin sensitivity. Early diagnosis and proactive management are crucial in preventing complications like cardiovascular disease, kidney damage, and neuropathy, thereby improving the quality of life for those affected.
