Obesity and Diabetes

Obesity and diabetes are intricately linked, with excess body weight significantly increasing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. When an individual is overweight, the body’s ability to use insulin effectively diminishes, leading to insulin resistance. This condition means that the cells do not respond to insulin as they should, causing elevated blood sugar levels. Moreover, adipose tissue (fat) releases inflammatory markers and hormones that further disrupt metabolic processes, exacerbating the risk of diabetes. Lifestyle modifications, including a balanced diet rich in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, alongside regular physical activity, play crucial roles in managing weight and lowering diabetes risk. For those already diagnosed, effective weight management can improve blood sugar control and reduce the need for medication, highlighting the importance of addressing obesity as a key strategy in diabetes prevention and management.
