Peripheral Glucose Metabolism in Diabetes

Peripheral glucose metabolism involves the uptake and utilization of glucose by tissues such as muscles, fat, and liver. In diabetes, particularly Type 2 Diabetes (T2D), insulin resistance in these tissues impairs glucose uptake, leading to elevated blood sugar levels. Skeletal muscle, as a primary site of glucose disposal, plays a key role in maintaining normal glucose homeostasis. In T2D, insulin signaling pathways are disrupted, leading to reduced glucose transporter (GLUT4) activity and glucose uptake. Strategies to improve peripheral glucose metabolism, such as exercise, diet modification, and pharmacological interventions, are essential in managing diabetes. Understanding how peripheral tissues respond to insulin is crucial for developing therapies that enhance insulin sensitivity and improve glycemic control in diabetic patients.
