Postprandial Metabolism in Diabetes

Postprandial metabolism refers to the body’s metabolic response after eating, which is significantly altered in diabetes. In healthy individuals, insulin efficiently regulates blood glucose levels by promoting glucose uptake in cells and inhibiting glucose production in the liver. However, in diabetic patients, insulin resistance or deficiency impairs these processes, leading to prolonged elevations in blood sugar levels after meals (postprandial hyperglycemia). This can contribute to vascular damage and increase the risk of complications such as cardiovascular disease. Managing postprandial blood glucose levels through diet, medications, and insulin therapy is crucial for minimizing the long-term effects of diabetes.
