Protein Kinase Activation in Diabetes

Protein kinases are essential for regulating various cellular processes, including insulin signaling. In diabetes, the activation of key kinases, such as AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and protein kinase B (AKT), is often disrupted. This dysregulation contributes to insulin resistance, impaired glucose uptake, and altered lipid metabolism. Enhancing protein kinase activity through lifestyle changes, such as exercise, or pharmacological agents can help restore normal signaling pathways. For instance, AMPK activators promote glucose uptake in skeletal muscles and improve insulin sensitivity. Targeting these protein kinases may present novel therapeutic strategies to improve glycemic control and reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications.
