Sarcopenia and Metabolism in Diabetic Patients

Sarcopenia, the loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength, is a common complication in diabetic patients, particularly those with Type 2 diabetes. Insulin resistance and chronic hyperglycemia accelerate muscle breakdown, impairing protein synthesis and leading to muscle atrophy. Sarcopenia worsens metabolic health by decreasing energy expenditure and increasing fat accumulation, creating a vicious cycle that exacerbates diabetes. Regular physical activity, resistance training, and adequate protein intake are crucial interventions to combat sarcopenia. Additionally, optimizing glucose control and addressing nutritional deficiencies can help prevent muscle loss and improve overall metabolic outcomes in diabetic patients.
