Sensorineural Complications in Diabetes

Sensorineural complications, such as diabetic neuropathy, are common in long-standing diabetes and are primarily caused by chronic hyperglycemia. High blood sugar damages nerves, particularly in the peripheral nervous system, leading to symptoms like pain, numbness, and tingling in the extremities. Additionally, diabetes can affect auditory and visual nerves, resulting in sensorineural hearing loss or retinopathy. Managing blood glucose levels is critical in preventing and slowing the progression of these complications. Research into neuroprotective agents and therapies aimed at regenerating damaged nerves offers hope for mitigating the sensorineural damage caused by diabetes.
