Systemic Metabolic Dysfunction in Diabetes

Diabetes is linked to systemic metabolic dysfunction that impacts various organ systems and metabolic pathways. In both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, elevated blood sugar levels lead to disruptions in carbohydrate, lipid, and protein metabolism. In type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance intensifies these metabolic challenges, resulting in dyslipidemia and a heightened risk of cardiovascular issues. Additionally, inflammation and oxidative stress significantly contribute to this dysfunction, worsening complications such as nephropathy and retinopathy. Effective diabetes management necessitates a holistic approach that tackles these interconnected metabolic disturbances through lifestyle changes, pharmacological treatments, and ongoing monitoring to enhance overall metabolic health and minimize long-term complications.
