Thermogenic Fat Activity in Diabetes

Brown adipose tissue (BAT) plays a pivotal role in thermogenesis and energy expenditure, utilizing stored lipids to generate heat. In individuals with diabetes, particularly type 2, BAT activity is often impaired due to insulin resistance and obesity. This diminished thermogenic capacity contributes to reduced energy expenditure, promoting weight gain and metabolic dysregulation. Furthermore, the browning of white adipose tissue (WAT) into beige fat, which also has thermogenic properties, is often impaired in diabetic states. Enhancing BAT function and promoting the browning of WAT are emerging strategies to combat obesity and improve insulin sensitivity, emphasizing the importance of thermogenic fat in diabetes management.
