Types of Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a condition in which blood sugar levels become elevated during pregnancy. It primarily occurs in two types: Class A1 and Class A2

  • Class A1 gestational diabetes can typically be managed through diet and exercise alone. Blood sugar levels remain fairly stable with lifestyle modifications, and medication is often unnecessary.
  • Class A2 gestational diabetes, on the other hand, requires medication such as insulin or oral drugs to manage blood sugar levels, in addition to diet and exercise. This type occurs when lifestyle changes alone cannot control glucose levels effectively.

Both types of gestational diabetes pose risks to both the mother and baby, such as increased chances of a large birth weight or preterm birth, but with proper management, these risks can be minimized. Regular monitoring and medical care are essential to maintaining a healthy pregnancy.
