Ubiquitin-Proteasome System in Diabetes

The ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) plays a crucial role in degrading proteins and maintaining cellular homeostasis. In diabetes, a malfunction in this system can lead to the buildup of misfolded proteins, which worsens insulin resistance and metabolic imbalances. The UPS is involved in regulating key proteins related to glucose metabolism, inflammation, and responses to cellular stress—factors central to diabetes progression. Dysfunction in this system can contribute to severe complications, including cardiovascular disease and neuropathy. Studying the interaction between the UPS and diabetes could open avenues for new treatments, such as drugs designed to enhance proteasome activity or specifically target problematic proteins. Understanding UPS involvement may help improve metabolic control and reduce diabetes complications.
