Vascular permeability is a critical factor in the complications associated with diabetes, particularly in the development of diabetic retinopathy and nephropathy. Hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia lead to the release of various inflammatory cytokines and growth factors, which can increase vascular permeability. Key players in this process include vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and advanced glycation end products (AGEs), both of which disrupt endothelial function. This dysfunction causes leakage of plasma proteins and fluids into surrounding tissues, exacerbating diabetic complications. Understanding the molecular mechanisms governing vascular permeability can provide insights into potential therapeutic targets. By modulating these factors, clinicians may prevent or alleviate the vascular complications of diabetes, ultimately improving patient outcomes and quality of life.
