Title : Diabetes management in Austria: Current statistics, treatment pathways and the role of dietetics
Abstract:
Diabetes mellitus represents one of the most significant public health challenges in Austria. Recent data indicate that approximately 8–10% of the Austrian population lives with diabetes, with an increasing trend particularly in type 2 diabetes. The Austrian healthcare system offers a wide range of treatment strategies, including pharmacological interventions, structured diabetes education, and an increasing emphasis on interdisciplinary care models. However, lifestyle modification remains a cornerstone in the management and prevention of diabetes, with dietetics playing a crucial role in this approach.
This presentation will provide an overview of the current epidemiological data on diabetes in Austria. Furthermore, it will outline the national treatment guidelines, highlighting the importance of evidence-based nutrition therapy as an integral component of diabetes care. In this context, the professional role of registered dietitians will be explored, including their involvement in patient education, medical nutrition therapy, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Special attention will be given to the Austrian landscape of dietetic services in diabetes care, existing barriers to patient access, and future opportunities for improved integration. By providing a comprehensive insight into the Austrian diabetes care system, this presentation aims to encourage discussion about best practices, challenges, and innovations in the field, and to underline the essential contribution of dietitians to effective and sustainable diabetes management.
