Abstract:

GLP-1–based therapies have transformed the management of type 2 diabetes and obesity by improving glycemic control, weight regulation, and cardiometabolic risk. As use of these agents expands into earlier stages of metabolic disease, including prediabetes, important questions remain regarding sustainability, long-term behavior change, and outcomes beyond pharmacologic intervention alone.

This presentation examines how GLP-1 science can be effectively paired with structured lifestyle coaching to prevent progression from prediabetes to type 2 diabetes and to support durable blood sugar control over time. Emphasis is placed on early metabolic dysfunction, a critical intervention window in which lifestyle-based strategies can significantly alter disease trajectory with or without medication.

The session explores the physiologic mechanisms of GLP-1—including satiety regulation, insulin sensitivity, appetite signaling, and stress-related glucose dysregulation—and how lifestyle coaching can reinforce these pathways through nutrition, physical activity, sleep optimization, and stress management. Particular attention is given to real-world challenges such as inconsistent adherence, overreliance on medication without behavior change, and loss of engagement after early success.

Drawing from prevention frameworks, clinical experience, and emerging evidence, the presentation highlights practical models for integrating GLP-1–informed coaching approaches into diabetes prevention and early management programs. The role of interdisciplinary teams in translating metabolic science into clear, actionable guidance that patients can realistically sustain is also discussed.

This presentation aligns with the conference theme “From Prevention to Control: Diabetes Across the Lifespan” by demonstrating how scientific innovation and lifestyle coaching can work together to support prevention, optimize long-term control, and advance more sustainable models of metabolic care.
