Methods: The quasi-experimental study was conducted in three phases among 450 patients with type 2 diabetes visiting two private diabetes care centers in the Lalitpur district. Firstly, questionnaire was developed based on the Pender’s Health Promotion Model. Then, the Diabetes Self-Management program was developed based on P-process of strategic communication. Finally, a pretest and post-test control group design was conducted. The data collection was from May 2022 to July, 2022. The study was ethically approved by IRC, Nobel College. The data processing was done in SPSS where the efficacy of the intervention was calculated by Mann-Whitney U test for comparing.
Results: Based on Pender’s Health Promotion Model, it was found that about 53% of the participants had poor dietary practice. Around 80% of them had a history of smoking and alcohol consumption. About 73% of them preferred intake of high calorie foods. More than half of the participants did not exercise. Before the intervention, there was no statistically significant difference between intervention and control group in the pretest score. However, after the intervention, there was statistically significant difference between intervention and control group scores which was in favor of intervention group.
Conclusions: Thus, the diabetes self-management program was found to be effective to change the attitude towards good dietary practice.
