Abstract:

This study aims to improve healthcare services for diabetic patients in the Kindia administrative region by offering dietary interventions to help them better manage their diabetes. Conducted over a six-month period, from February 18 to July 18, 2021, this prospective, descriptive, cross-sectional study included 220 diabetic patients. Among them, 48 patients (22%) had well-controlled blood glucose (<0.80–1.30 g/L), while 122 patients (68.18%) had poorly controlled blood glucose and 22 (10%) had severely uncontrolled blood glucose (>2 g/L). Positive glycosuria was observed in 54% of patients, while 46% had normal glycosuria. Analysis of urinary parameters revealed that 15% of patients had abnormal ketone bodies. A normal HbA1c level (<7%) was observed in 37.93% of patients, while 13.79% had an uncontrolled (7% to 9%) or severely uncontrolled (>9%) HbA1c level. Hematological analyses revealed significant variability: 56% of patients had anemia, 4% had eosinophilia, 1% had basophilia, and 1% had hemoglobinemia. The anemic profile was characterized by mild anemia in 75% of patients, moderate anemia in 20%, and severe anemia in 5%. Furthermore, 25% of patients had microcytic anemia and 75% had normocytic anemia. Demographically, women comprised 65% of the study group, compared to 35% men. The most represented age group was 41 to 60 years, accounting for 52% of patients, followed by 61 to 80 years (36%). Diabetes affected all districts of Kindia.
