Diabetic Coma

A diabetic coma is a life-threatening complication of diabetes that occurs when blood sugar levels become extremely high (hyperglycemia) or dangerously low (hypoglycemia). In this state, the brain is deprived of glucose or overwhelmed by excess sugar, leading to loss of consciousness. A diabetic coma can occur due to diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state (HHS), or severe hypoglycemia. Symptoms preceding a coma may include confusion, rapid breathing, extreme thirst, fatigue, or sweating. Immediate medical intervention is critical, as untreated diabetic coma can lead to brain damage or death. Prevention includes regular monitoring of blood sugar, medication adherence, and proper diet management to keep glucose levels stable.
