Diagnosis, Prevention, and Treatment of Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes (GD) is a condition defined by high blood sugar levels that occur during pregnancy. Diagnosis typically occurs through glucose screening tests, usually between the 24th and 28th weeks of pregnancy. Early detection is crucial as unmanaged GD can lead to complications for both the mother and the baby. Preventing gestational diabetes involves lifestyle modifications such as maintaining a healthy diet rich in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, along with regular physical activity. Monitoring weight gain during pregnancy is also essential. Treatment focuses on controlling blood sugar levels through diet, exercise, and, if necessary, insulin therapy. Regular monitoring of glucose levels is vital. Women diagnosed with GD should receive support and education to manage their condition effectively, reducing the risk of complications and improving outcomes for both mother and child. Postpartum follow-up is important to ensure blood glucose levels return to normal and to screen for potential type 2 diabetes.
