Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA) is a slowly progressive form of autoimmune diabetes, often misclassified as type 2 diabetes due to its age of onset. It typically occurs in adults over 30 and is characterized by the presence of autoantibodies against pancreatic islet cells, leading to insulin deficiency. Epidemiologically, LADA accounts for approximately 5-10% of all diabetes cases. It is more prevalent in women than men and is associated with a higher incidence in individuals with a family history of autoimmune diseases. The clinical presentation can be misleading, as patients may initially manage their condition with oral medications before transitioning to insulin therapy. Early identification and appropriate management are crucial to prevent complications associated with prolonged hyperglycemia and to tailor treatment strategies that consider the autoimmune nature of the disease. Understanding the epidemiology of LADA aids in better diagnosis and personalized care for affected individuals.
