Macrosomia in Gestational Diabetes

Macrosomia is a condition where a fetus grows larger than average, typically weighing more than 4,000 to 4,500 grams at birth. It is a common complication in pregnancies affected by gestational diabetes (GDM), a type of diabetes that develops during pregnancy. Elevated maternal blood glucose levels lead to increased fetal insulin production, causing excessive fat deposition and rapid growth. Macrosomia poses several risks, including delivery complications such as shoulder dystocia, increased chances of cesarean section, and birth injuries. Post-birth, infants with macrosomia may have an elevated risk of developing metabolic disorders like obesity or Type 2 diabetes later in life. Proper management of gestational diabetes through diet, exercise, and insulin therapy, when necessary, is crucial to reduce the risk of macrosomia and its associated complications.
