Non-Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy

Non-Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (NPDR) is an early stage of diabetic eye disease, occurring when high blood sugar levels damage the small blood vessels in the retina. In NPDR, these vessels may leak fluid or blood, leading to retinal swelling and the formation of small, yellow-white patches known as exudates. Patients often experience no symptoms in the initial stages, making regular eye examinations crucial for early detection. If left untreated, NPDR can progress to proliferative diabetic retinopathy, a more severe condition that can lead to vision loss. Effective management of diabetes through blood sugar control, healthy lifestyle choices, and routine eye check-ups can significantly reduce the risk of developing NPDR and its complications. Awareness of this condition is essential for maintaining ocular health in individuals with diabetes.
