Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent endocrine disorder affecting women of reproductive age, closely linked with insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Women with PCOS frequently exhibit metabolic disturbances such as obesity, dyslipidemia, and hyperglycemia. Insulin resistance in PCOS can lead to compensatory hyperinsulinemia, exacerbating hyperandrogenism and menstrual irregularities. The incidence of prediabetes and diabetes is notably higher in women with PCOS compared to the general population. Early diagnosis and management of insulin resistance are essential for preventing diabetes onset. Lifestyle modifications, including weight loss and regular exercise, effectively enhance insulin sensitivity and restore menstrual regularity. Additionally, medications like metformin are often prescribed to manage insulin resistance in women with PCOS, offering dual benefits for both metabolic health and fertility.
