Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy

Proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) is a serious complication of diabetes that occurs when elevated blood sugar levels harm the blood vessels in the retina. This condition is characterized by the growth of new, abnormal blood vessels, which can leak fluid and bleed into the eye, leading to vision loss. Early symptoms often go unnoticed, making regular eye examinations crucial for diabetic patients. If left untreated, PDR can result in significant vision impairment or blindness. Treatment options include laser therapy to shrink abnormal vessels, anti-VEGF injections to reduce swelling, and vitrectomy to remove blood and scar tissue. Maintaining stable blood sugar levels through proper management of diabetes can help prevent the onset and progression of PDR, highlighting the importance of education and proactive health care in managing this condition.
